WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF USING ONE INJECTION THERAPY OVER ANOTHER?

The two most commonly dispensed forms of injection therapy for erectile dysfunction are Prostaglandin Ei alone, and the 'tri-mix' or 'quad-mix', which is a combination of Papaverine, Phentolamine and Prostaglandin and adding atropine for the 'quad-mix'.

Prostaglandin El
Pros:
•          Lower incidence of priapism (persistent erection) formation (experienced by between one and five per cent of patients)
•          Apparently has a lower incidence of scar tissue formation
•          Has a 70 per cent response rate
•          Is the most effective monotherapy (single drug therapy).
Cons:
•          Significant incidence of pain on injection in 50 per cent of patients, but this diminishes with time
•          Has a lower success rate than other injection therapies
•          If a large volume is required it may increase the risk of scar tissue formation
•          Requires refrigeration and in some cases freezing.
Tri-mix and quad-mix
Pros:
•          Very low incidence of pain on injection
•          Much smaller volumes required, thus reducing the risk of scar tissue formation
•          Is a much stronger medication resulting in a higher success rate.
Cons:
•          Higher incidence of priapism.
•          Shorter shelf life.
•          Requires refrigeration but not freezing.
