Vaginal Yeast Infections
I had a vaginal discharge and terrible itching so I saw my doctor. He told me I had a yeast infection and prescribed vaginal suppositories.
What is a yeast infection? is it necessarily caused by sex? is it contagious (like I have a boyfriend and all)?
Next to Trichomonas vaginalis, yeast (monilia, fungus) is the chief cause of vaginal infections. The same organism (monilia albicans) causes "thrush" in the mouths of children. In fact, an important cause of thrush in children is transmission from the mother during childbirth.
Yeast is often present in the vagina without causing any symptoms. But when broad spectrum antibiotics are given (tetracycline, for example), normal vaginal bacteria are killed, thus allowing the yeast organisms to grow and multiply. Diabetic women are especially susceptible to monilial infections.
Symptoms of monilial infections are a vaginal discharge, irritation of the vulvae (lips of the vagina), and itching.
The same symptoms may be caused by other infections, such as trichomonas or, less commonly, gonorrhea. That's another reason for seeing a doctor whenever these symptoms occur. I've known girls who borrow medication from girlfriends because they think they have the same disease. But a pelvic and microscopic examination is necessary, for often there are "mixed" vaginal infections.
Treatment includes application of gentian violet (which accounts for many purple bottoms) or vaginal suppositories.
Monilial infections are not transmitted by sexual contact but tend to recur, so don't be discouraged if more treatments are necessary.
Vaginal Trichomonas Infections
Can one become infected with vaginal trichomonas through digital anal penetration and subsequent digital vaginal penetration? My gynecologist noted that the microbe is normally found in parts of the digestive system.
Trichomonas vaginalis is a single-celled organism which is readily identified under a microscope by its tail, or flagella, and peculiar, rapid movement. The trichomonad found in the digestive tract, Trichomonas hominis, is identical in appearance and the two are distinguished only by their location in the body. Since twenty per cent of all women have Trichomonas vaginalis organisms, it seems likely that the two are, in fact, the same.
Vaginitis caused by trichomonas is characterized by itching and a foul smelling yellow-green discharge. In the male there are usually no symptoms though there may be a thin discharge and some burning or itching on urination. Rarely, the infection may descend to the testicles. The presence of trichomonads does not necessarily mean that there is also an infection present. As indicated above, they are normally found in the digestive tract and may be found in the vagina even when there are no symptoms.
Trichomonads are usually transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact. The means that you suggest is certainly plausible if T. vaginalis and T. hominis are really the same critters. And it is another reason women should use toilet tissue front to back rather than back to front.
Treatment of Trichomonas vaginalis vaginitis has become simple in recent years; pills are taken by mouth for ten days. Both male and female must take the medication or the infection will bounce back and forth like a ping-pong ball.
