MENIERE'S DISEASE: CAUSES OF DIZZINESS, DISORIENTATION AND UNSTEADINESS

The sense of balance is controlled by a "balance system" which brings together information from three different sources:
1. Vision. You can literally see where you are and where you are going.
2 All the sensors in the body, the joints, muscles, soles of the feet, and so on. With these sensors you can feel where you are and how you are moving.
3. A set of fluid-filled tubes in the inner ear known as the vestibular organ. This gives out signals whenever the head is moved or tilted.
Information about your position and movements from these three sources is fed to the brain. The brain acts like a computer, combining information from all the senses to give a stable picture of the world and to control head, body and eye movements.
If any part of this balance system is giving out unusual or faulty information then dizziness and imbalance may result. Your doctor or specialist will usually be able to tell you which part of the balance system is causing your dizziness, although tests may be needed to pin-point the cause.
