Dear Dr. Schoenfeld:
I've had two recent attacks of crabs—in my eyelashes! No one seems to know too much about the various types of crab-attacks.
I had crabs in one eyelash—rid myself of them (I thought)— and three weeks later I found myself infested again—in the same eyelash.
Are there different types of crabs? Why do I only get them in my eyelash? What methods of transmission are there? And what's the best way to get them out of my eyelash? So they won't come back?

While scratching my crotch I am writing to ask what to do about crabs. I've tried alcohol and soap and water without success. Some very close friends have the same problem.
Crabs or crab lice are spread by intimate physical contact or sharing infested bedding. There are three types of crab lice: Pediculus capitis (head lice), Pediculus corporis (body lice), and Pediculus pubis (pubic lice).
The lice attach themselves to the skin and lay their eggs on the body hairs close to the skin (except for P. corporis or body lice which lay their eggs in clothing). They have the appearance of minute crabs and are nourished by the blood of the host.
A nude beach devotee has suggested placing sand in the affected areas on the assumption that the crabs will then stone themselves to death with the sand granules. If this is ineffective there are several preparations you can purchase without a prescription at your pharmacy. One is Cuprex, which is in a kerosene-like base; another is Topicide.
The treatment is simple. Rub the liquid into the affected areas (don't get it in your eyes!), wait half an hour to an hour, and shower or bathe. Then comb out the hair with a fine-toothed comb. Most important also is laundering or dry-cleaning bed sheets and garments at the same time treatment is started. Rarely, a second treatment is necessary. Don't use DDT powder alone since this will only kill the crab lice but not their eggs. Your very close friends should also be treated or you'll be reinfected.
