FROST-A-LUNG
The October 1-15, 1967, issue of the East Village Other ran a letter for a new turn-on. In case you haven't seen the letter, it says to buy a can of "instant icer," "frost-a-glass" or a similar glass chiller, spray some in a plastic bag, allow to warm up and inhale. Could you please tell us if this is harmful?
Glass chillers use Freon gases to cause an icing effect. When inhaled, these gases apparently produce a high, but may also cause severe lung irritation.
Several deaths have resulted from inhaling gas directly from the aerosol container. These deaths were probably due to freezing and subsequent swelling of the larynx. The air passage to the larynx is cut off and the victim dies a horrible death by strangulation. Using a plastic bag eliminates the danger of instant death but the gas is still irritating to the lungs. This is an example of a perfectly legal but very dangerous way to turn on.
