HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: ENEMAS AND EPILEPSY
Enemas
Enemas produce a quick effective evacuation of the bowel contents. Liquid substances such as soap and water, coloxyl or glycerol find frequent use. All of these products produce a local irritation of the bowel wall causing spasm, an excess of secretions and a bowel motion in short order. Durolax, Microlax and Glycerine suppositories are available over the counter at chemist shops.
Epilepsy
An epileptic seizure starts as a local flash of neurological lightning, which soon sets the whole surface of the brain on electrical fire. When the entire cerebral cortex is affected, loss of consciousness precedes the contraction and spasm of all the body's voluntary muscles. In Grand Mai Epileptic Seizures the control of bowel and bladder function is frequently an early casualty.
Epileptic seizures are not usually harmful of themselves but they do become dangerous if the epileptic is driving, riding a bicycle or swimming. Most Australian states prevent epileptics from holding a driving license unless they can demonstrate that they have been seizure free for a period of two consecutive years.
Epilepsy is often associated with other neurological disorders and a complete search for identifiable causes is initiated by the doctor at the time of a patient’s first presentation. 50 per cent of people taking anticonvulsant medication such as Dilantin, Epilim or Tegretol for two years have no further seizures after medication is gradually withdrawn.
Home Remedies
Parents of children with epilepsy often fall into the habit of over protecting their child. It is fair to supervise a child closely in the swimming pool and on a pushbike. Bicycles should not be ridden without a helmet, but in any case this rule now applies to all children. Remember that taking no risks with a child denies the positive advantages of many forms of play.
