HOW YOU CAN GET THE BEST RESULTS FROM THE BREAST - DOING THE BREAST SELF-EXAM RIGHT (ORDER)
Now that you know how to do the breast self-exam properly, it isn't enough to do it "once in a while." The following tips will improve your odds of finding something abnormal:
Do the BSE every month, at the same time of the month. Your breasts change with your hormonal cycle, so it's best to get to know your breasts at one standard time, and follow them for changes from that standard.
Do the BSE during the week after your period, when your breasts are least swollen or lumpy. Not only will it feel better to handle your breasts when they're less likely to be tender, but it will also increase the chance of your feeling something abnormal.
Be sure to check not just the actual breast itself but surrounding areas as well—near the underarm, up to the collarbone, and so on, as illustrated above. Breast tissue is found at a wider margin than most people realize.
Dr. Susan Love, noted breast surgeon and author of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, tells patients to keep the following in mind when doing the BSE: Look for persistent, unchanging lumps that you didn't have before (if it appears one month and is gone the next, it's more likely to be unimportant.) However, any lump you're worried about is worth showing to your doctor; your instincts are good, especially if you have learned to do the BSE properly.
