HOW YOU CAN GET THE BEST RESULTS FROM THE BREAST (SELF-EXAM (BSE))
Getting to Know Your Breasts
Dr. Yvonne Thornton of Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey bemoans the fact that the medical community has turned the breast self-exam into something women fear, rather than cherish, because doctors have set women up to fear either doing the exam wrong or discovering something frightening in our bodies. Instead of telling her patients to search for lumps in their breasts, Dr. Thornton tells them to simply learn what their breasts are like! Are they firm, soft, large, small, bumpy, smooth, or thick in certain places? Just as if you walked outside with your eyes closed you'd feel pebbles under your feet, so, Dr. Thornton says, if you close your eyes and feel your breasts you'll automatically get to know the map of their bumps and lumps. You don't need a special degree to do this! Bend over with your hands on your hips and see how your breasts fall—are they dimpling, or do they look different from how they looked a couple of months ago? Stand straight and look at them in the mirror. Run your hands over them in the shower when they're soapy and easy to feel. Dr. Thornton also recommends a proper breast self-exam (we'll outline one method in just a moment). But above all else, she urges women to just plain become acquainted with their breasts in a natural, unthreatening way.
