HAIR PRODUCTS AND PROCEDURES THAT CAN CAUSE SKIN REACTIONS - PERMANENT HAIR DYES; PERMANENT WAVE
While shampoos seldom cause anything more serious than irritation to the skin (on the eyelids, tops of the ears, or forehead) other hair products and procedures can be far more damaging. Here are the most prominent examples:
Long-lasting hair dyes can cause severe allergic reactions that show up as redness and itching on the scalp, and severe swelling of the face and eyelids. The offending agent is called PPD—standing for paraphenylene diamene. Some people react so badly their heads swell up like balloons and they need emergency medical attention. If you have ever had a serious reaction to a permanent hair dye, you should completely abstain from using them. There are safer alternatives, such as metallic dyes, and vegetable dyes, which are far less likely to cause skin problems. Some dermatologists recommend having a skin patch test either before using permanent dyes the first time around or if you've had even a suspected allergic reaction to one in the past, since repeat exposures can be more severe.
"Perms," as most of us call them, usually involve one of two chemicals: For older "alkaline" perms, the chemical is Ammonium Thioglycolate; for newer "acid" perms, it's glyceryl thioglycolate. Both can cause irritations and even burns to the skin if left on too long.
