EXPERIENCING MENIERE'S DISEASE: DENIAL
Usually people enter the denial stage early in the progression of the disease. Attacks are infrequent and the diagnosis may not have been confirmed. They may delay seeking medical attention. Denial may be expressed by denying to yourself and others that you have difficulties with balance and hearing. In order to hide the truth for as long as possible, you make excuses for the signs and symptoms you are experiencing. It's the fading light, the uneven surface or moving too quickly that makes you stumble or stagger. It's others mumbling or not speaking clearly, or background noise that makes hearing difficult.
Denial provides a useful function in that it allows you time to recover from the shock of realizing that you do have problems. It can be the longest stage for some people. Some people develop highly sophisticated compensatory responses to the loss of balance and hearing which make it difficult for others to detect that there is a problem. Fears of losing your independence, losing your employment, becoming a burden to others, or that you are going crazy are frequent concerns.
As Meniere's disease progresses and attacks worsen or become more severe, family and friends may begin to comment. You cannot pretend any longer and you become angry. People whose condition stabilizes or who go into long term remission at this point may not experience the next three stages. They may instead go straight to the final stage of acceptance or resolution.
