AGING AND MIND: BODY’S INFLUENCE ON MIND
There is a connection between our physical state and our mental sharpness. When people are sick, their IQ scores tend to decline. Illness saps us of the energy to think clearly. Some diseases - a heart condition or arteriosclerosis or hypertension, for instance - may even impair the blood supply and nutrients that get to our brain.
If you are one of the many people with a chronic condition, do not read this information as your intellectual epitaph. Provided you do not have a brain illness such as Alzheimer's disease, the direct effect your disease may have on your clarity of mind is likely to be minor. Its indirect impact may be marked - being sick keeps you from having a stimulating life. When we are focusing on our aches and pains or are confined by illness to looking at four walls, it is difficult to be intelligent. It is the way disease constricts our life that makes us less mentally quick.
If you are sick, take special care to remain as mentally active as possible. Ask yourself: "Is my illness restricting my life to an excessive degree?" "How can I be more active in the world and so improve my thinking in spite of my condition?" Search out any device that will help you be more physically independent.
By what hook or crook can you get to that art class or lecture? If you cannot get there, is there a way of doing the same intellectually enriching activity at home? Evaluate your medications with your doctor; many drugs have a dulling effect. Have you become more dizzy or drowsy since beginning that pill? If so could you change to another or reduce the dose?
Our physical state can be a damper to staying mentally active, but it is not an insurmountable one. Many of the world's masterpieces have been fired in the crucible of physical suffering: The example of Beethoven and Michelangelo producing their finest work in their years of declining health shows that even in an unsound body, the mind can soar.
