BARBITURATES
Recently I've come into many friends who have used yellow jackets but none of them agree or have similar experiences. What kind of high do they produce and how (if at all) harmful are they?
"Yellow jackets" are capsules containing phenobarbital or secobarbital, both barbiturates. The medical uses for barbiturates in this form are for sedation and to induce sleep.
Before the widespread use of marijuana and LSD, barbiturates were commonly used, often in combination with amphetamines or alcohol, to produce a "high," though "low" would better describe the experience.
Barbiturates are physically addicting, and once hooked the "yellow jacket" addict must have his drug every day. Without it he will have withdrawal symptoms worse than those felt by morphine or heroin addicts when they try to kick their habits.
Twenty-four hours after barbiturates are withdrawn from an addict, he experiences twitching of the muscles and uncontrollable shaking of the arms and legs. During the second day, most addicts have one or more gran mal convulsions. Between the third and seventh day a psychotic episode begins, marked by vivid hallucinations and delusions.
The "cold turkey" withdrawal method used for narcotic addicts must not be used for barbiturate addiction. Withdrawal from barbiturates should be carried out in a hospital under strict medical supervision.
