Tell us about "speed." What happens to the body and brain when "meth" (crystals and tabs) is taken in small and large doses?
"Meth" (methamphetamine) is used in medicine for appetite control, mood elevation, and to raise blood pressure when indicated. The drug is usually ingested in five-milligram tablets one to three times a day. Medical reasons for injecting methamphetamine are specific and few.
Tolerance to the amphetamines develops rapidly and increasingly large amounts must be used to achieve the same results. When large amounts are used, blood-pressure may be raised sufficiently high to blow out a blood vessel in the brain, thus causing a stroke.
True addiction, as well, seems to occur. Recently, a patient in a drug-abuse clinic stated that it was harder for him to kick the "meth" habit than it was to get off heroin. At the time he was shooting up two hundred milligrams of "crystals" every two hours. He was found dead a few weeks later, apparently from an overdose.
An eighteen-year-old boy on methamphetamine climbed out of a third-story window in Berkeley not long ago. He is now confined to a neurological institute, completely paralyzed from the effects of a broken back.
Both general and student hospitals are seeing increasingly greater numbers of sixteen-to-twenty-five-year-old people who have caught hepatitis from a needle used to inject methamphetamine. Neither boiling water nor soaking in alcohol will necessarily kill the hepatitis virus found in too many spikes. Speed kills.
Speed and Pregnancy
I am seven-and-a-half-months pregnant and I sleep twelve hours a day, sometimes more. I take thyroid tablets, but I still seem to lack energy and gain weight fast. Would it be unwise for me to take diet pills? Also, what is "speed" and what is "meth"?
A large weight gain during pregnancy may be harmful to you and your unborn baby. Your physician can best advise you about ways to control your diet. "Speed" is slang for the amphetamines which include dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), methamphetamine (Methedrine, Desoxyn), and amphetamine (Benzedrine). All these drugs have a useful place in medical practice but may be harmful when misused. You would be risking the health of you and your baby by taking "speed" or other drugs during pregnancy without the advice of your physician.
Speeding the Fetus
What are the effects of Dexedrine, Benzedrine, and "speed" in general on an unborn child?
As you might imagine, no one has taken two groups of women and given amphetamines to one group and placebos to the other just to determine the effects on unborn children. The effects are probably the same as in adults, i.e., increased heart rate and blood-pressure (the effects on the brain of a fetus are unknown). Since drugs taken during pregnancy may cause congenital defects or endanger the pregnancy itself, my advice is to forego "speed" lest it adversely affect your child.
