I understand there are millions of people so psychologically dependent on the drug caffeine that they feel they cannot function without strong doses when they wake up.
Most large cities have establishments where extra-strong doses of this drug can be obtained at will. They are shamelessly called "coffeehouses."
There sit hour after hour, day after day, many erstwhile useful citizens, lost to society.
Enclosed is a clipping from the December 11, 1967, San Francisco Chronicle. The article indicates that caffeine may damage cell chromosomes and cause miscarriages. Could you comment, please?
A German geneticist, Dr. Wolfram Ostertag, recently reported that caffeine in coffee and soft drinks may cause miscarriages, birth defects, and changes in cell chromosomes.
His report to a meeting on human genetics at the University of Chicago indicated that in experiments with human cells, the addition of caffeine broke up cell chromosomes.
Caffeine may also affect birth rates. When mice were fed caffeine, the birth rate dropped from the usual five-to-seven per litter to one or two per litter.
Dr. Ostertag said, "The possibility exists that caffeine is one of the most dangerous mutation-causing agents in man since it is known that caffeine penetrates to the human germinal tissue and through the placental barrier to the human fetus."
Caffeine is a central nervous stimulant which in small doses produces alertness, wakefulness, talkativeness, and increased urination. Excessive doses cause insomnia and agitation. The drug is commonly used to stimulate comatose patients.
There is increasing evidence that other common drugs, such as aspirin, cause the same changes in cell chromosomes as has been claimed for LSD. The significance of these changes, if they occur, is unknown.
Perhaps coffee will be an illegal drug someday, denounced in State of the Union messages. But one suspects many would continue to use the drug, despite heavy penalties. Coffee beans would be smuggled into the country from nearby Latin American countries to poison the minds and bodies of our youth. But detecting users might be easy, especially in the morning.
