GOUT: SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT
Gout is a form of arthritis, typified by the sudden onset of excruciating joint pain. The pain is accompanied by redness, tenderness and swelling. Attacks can last for days and they are caused by the precipitation of uric acid crystals into any joint of the body. A number of serious conditions such as cancer and multiple myeloma lead to an increase in the bodies’ serum uric acid; doctors conduct a number of routine pathological investigations before settling on the diagnosis of simple gout.
The medical management of gout involves two important groups of drugs. The first contains Indocid, Naprosyn and Brufen. Doctors prescribe them to relieve the pain and inflammation of an acute attack. The second group includes Zyloprim, Probenecid and Sulphinpyrazone. These drugs act to prevent acute attacks by returning the serum uric acid levels back to normal. Patients started on this latter group of drugs can suffer sever exacerbations of their gout. The lowering of serum uric acid levels causes crystals to precipitate out of the joints back into solution. It is advisable to continue a course of Indocid etc. for some weeks after a trial of gout preventing medication has been initiated.
Home Remedies
The typical gout sufferer is an overweight, middle aged man with a family history of the complaint. Ice can be applied to relieve the pain of an acute attack; although too often the affected joint is so tender that the pain of contact can not be endured. A diet low in "purines" is often advocated to maintain a reduction of the serum uric acid. Low purine diets exclude anchovies, brains, consomme, gravy, heart, herrings, kidney, liver, meat extracts, mussels, sardines, meat containing mince meat and sweetbreads. Alcohol appears to provoke attacks of gout in some people and those people are advised to avoid it.
