FORMAL NETWORKS TO GET HELP: COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRIC NURSE

These nurses are specially trained in psychiatry and usually in general nursing as well. They are often known as CPNs and work full-time in the community, supporting people with all types of psychiatric disorders. Some work with all age groups, some have a specific interest in elderly people. Many work from a local hospital setting and therefore liaise very closely with the psycho-geriatrician; others work out of health centers and therefore get referrals from GPs and other health care professionals.
CPNs cover the whole range of mental illness and therefore offer help and support to both sufferers of and carers of those with depression, anxiety states, schizophrenia, as well as dementia. A lot of their work involves coping with crises and then monitoring the situation to stop the same thing happening again. This means close liaison with social services and the other parts of the health service. It also means that they are only as effective as the next part of the chain. They are given great responsibility; they help ensure compliance with medication, and deal with the regular injections that some sufferers need.
