HIRSUTISM AND HIVES
Hirsutism
Hirsutism is considered more of a problem in women than it is in men. 20 per cent of women suffer from the presence of unwanted body hair and rarely is an excess of body hair the product of an illness. More often it is the outcome of genetic variation. Medicine offers a number of medications to women who require the diminution of cosmetically unpleasant facial hair. Aldactone - normally considered a Fluid Tablet - reduces excess hair in many women; but the side effect profile is less than satisfactory. Androcur, a female sex hormone with anti testosterone effects is probably safer and it can be combined with oestrogen to provide effective contraception.
Home Remedies
Shaving remains the simplest and safest way of removing unwanted body hair. Contrary to popular opinion, when hair is shaved off it doesn't grow back faster or thicker. Other methods of hair reduction include depilatory creams, which are very effective and electrolysis which is also satisfactory, albeit a little painful. In burning out the hair roots, electrolysis increases the possibility of visible scarring.
Hives
A rapid dilation and leakage of capillaries causing blotchy swelling all over the skin of the body and face signifies the appearance of hives. By themselves, hives are harmless, but they can be alarming and itchy. In some people the hives progress to asthma or the swelling of tissues in and around the larynx which can be immediately life threatening. Antihistamines produce a rapid reversal of hives and a few people need to take antihistamines all the time to prevent the next attack. Adrenalin reverses the unusual effect of hives very quickly, but because of the danger, its use is reserved for the medical practitioner.
