FORMAL NETWORKS TO GET HELP: DAY CENTERS, HEARING THERAPIST
Day centers
These are run by the local authority and again may be split into those that have a special expertise in dealing with elderly physically frail and the elderly mentally infirm. The idea is not for treatment and rehabilitation but for a place to go for companionship, a hot meal and a lot of diversional therapy (be it card games, outings, special talks, fund-raising drives, etc.). Carers get a break, -while the person concerned usually has a very full day out. Day centers obviously vary as to their standards but most have waiting lists to get in. In many cases it is the provision of transport that is the hold-up. Some do not cater for the very physically handicapped or for those with special needs (blindness, incontinence, confusion), although there may be a centre locally specifically dealing with that minority group.
Hearing therapist
Hearing therapy is a relatively new specialty introduced to provide more continuous comprehensive help than was possible by issuing hearing aids alone. The therapist tries to help individuals with an acquired hearing loss make the most of their residual hearing, teaching them to use every available auditory and visual clue and thus making it possible for them to live with less anxiety in a world that relies on language for communication. The hearing therapist is concerned with rehabilitating the hearing impaired person, and a tailor-made programme is planned which includes auditory training, lip-reading, help with the hearing aid, advice on environmental aids and advice on how to cope with hearing loss.
