HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: HPV AND HYDROCORTISONE
Human Papilloma Wart Virus (HPV)
A score of viruses cause warts in humans and certain members of the human papilloma family are sexually transmitted. HPV would not be a worrisome infection if medical scientists had not found particles of the virus inside cancerous cells of the cervix. Now HPV is identified and treated on sight as a cofactor in the development of cervical cancer. Unfortunately, treatment of HPV is no more effective than treatment of any other warts on the body. It is always sad to read stories of complete vulvectomies in women treated surgically for HPV. There can be no guarantee the virus will not recur.
Home Remedies
Visible warts on the external genitalia can be treated effectively as they arise with over the counter wart preparations. Women need an internal examination to exclude warts around the cervix. The vagina and cervix are painted with a weak vinegar solution with areas affected by the virus turning white. A weak solution can also be painted on the penis with similar colour changes on the skin of affected males. This technique allows detection of infected areas before the warts assume their typical sessile papillomatous appearance.
Hydrocortisone
Hydrocortisone is the weakest available anti allergy steroid hormone. It is commonly applied to the skin via creams and ointments. Until recently Hydrocortisone was the only topical steroid that doctors advocated in the treatment of children and for use on the face. Another steroid called Logoderm has been produced and it rivals Hydrocortisone in efficacy and safety.
