AMYL NITRITE OR “POPPERS”
Dear Doctor:
I have recently discovered the effects of a drug called amyl nitrite, generally sold in glass vials known as "poppers." The vial is broken and the escaping vapor is inhaled deeply to produce a rapid, intense, but short-lived high (five minutes or so).
Several of my friends and I use poppers (a couple of times a week, seldom more than two in an evening). We frequently use them during sex. We should like to know whether the drug is dangerous in any way.

Amyl nitrite is a drug used in the treatment of angina pectoris, or pain resulting from constriction of the coronary arteries of the heart. The drug is available in mesh-covered capsules or "poppers."
When the capsule is "popped" or crushed and the contents inhaled, coronary and other blood vessels are dilated or enlarged, thus allowing a greater flow of blood. The dilatation is responsible for a flush (both felt and observable) which gives the sensation of a brief, sensual high.
If amyl nitrite is used excessively, there is the possibility of causing methhemoglobinemia, a potentially dangerous condition in which blood cells change color and give the skin a cyanotic or blue appearance.
The most commonly noted ill effects are headache, dizziness, weakness, and a severe bronchitis.
