STP
What can you tell me about STP? My roommate has been saving two tablets he says are STP for over a year and has offered to give me one of them.
The initials "STP" have no relation to the drug's chemical formula, which is methyl dimethoxy methyl phenylethylamine. STP was reportedly choosen as a popular name because of its put-on potential.
STP was first synthesized by chemist Alexander Shulgin, Ph.D., who was working for Dow Chemical at the time. The drug is said to produce a psychedelic experience more intense than LSD and lasting three times as long.
When the drug first appeared on the black market in the spring of 1967, about one per cent of its users required treatment in clinics and hospitals. This apparently resulted from placing twice the "recommended" dose in each tablet (20mgm vs. 10 mgm).
Treatment of bad STP trips should be conducted with caution. At least one death was reported from the combination of STP and chlorpromazine (Thorazine). Perhaps the drug which indirectly caused the death was not STP (belladonna, for example, is often pushed as a psychedelic drug); in any case, no phenothiazine should be used for treating STP trips. These include Thorazine, Compazine, Stelazine, Prolixin, Largon, Permitil, Sparine, and Tindal.
