LSD Liver
Dear Dr. Schoenfeld:
Is it safe for a person with a liver problem to take LSD? I have heard it puts a strain on the liver and may cause trouble. Still, I've talked with other people who say friends have just recovered from hepatitis and dropped acid without complications. How does acid get involved with the liver anyway?

The metabolism of LSD after ingestion is still largely a mystery but it may be partially broken down by the liver. That is the reason for the concern about LSD straining an already damaged liver.
No one knows at this time if a damaged liver will be further harmed by LSD though the minute quantity involved makes this seem unlikely.

Bloody Lie
In school we were told that when LSD was put in a jar of human blood, after a certain amount of time the chromosomes in the blood were destroyed. They also said that this destruction was evident in blood samples taken from acid-heads and that their offspring will be mutants. Is this true? To say that you were told half-truths would be an exaggeration.
Studies made of the effect of LSD on chromosomes have given conflicting results. Half the studies conclude that LSD causes changes in cell chromosomes while the others have shown no change in cell chromosomes of LSD users. One of the latter studies were published in the October 27, 1967, Science, but received little attention by the news media.
The meaning of cell chromosome changes, if they occur, is even more obscure. No authority in the field has ever said that the alleged chromosomal changes had caused harm to LSD users. Some believe that the chromosomes appear similar to those found in certain types of leukemia, but no case of leukemia has ever been linked to LSD use.
One case has been reported of a mother taking LSD three times during pregnancy and bearing a deformed child. If the use of LSD prior to pregnancy led to birth defects we could expect an epidemic similar to the thalidomide disaster, but this is not the case. No drug (including LSD) should be taken during pregnancy except on the advice of a physician, lest harm be done to the unborn child.
Acid and Joints
After a recent session with acid, I noticed severe pain in the joints of my knees, my neck, and my groin. Is this common, is it me, or is it the acid?
LSD users have often reported muscle cramps and aching in the joints under the effects of the drug. Whether this is due to the effects of LSD or whether the user moves about less than he does usually is unclear.
I have observed similar effects in Africans given the hallucinogenic root Tabernanthe lboga. At intervals during ceremonial dances, the limbs of the patient are stretched, apparently to prevent muscle cramps.
Fathers and LSD
Dr. Schoenfeld:
In an article on the dangers of LSD causing birth defects in babies whose mothers had taken the drug, it failed to mention anything about the father of the child.
If the mother has never taken it but the father has, and assuming that the chromosomes have been changed or damaged, can abnormalities in the child still result from the father's use?

In theory, abnormalities in the child could result from damaged chromosomes in the father. But this has never happened despite the hundreds of thousands or millions of prospective fathers who have taken LSD trips.
Gross changes in chromosomes would more likely result in sterility than malformations. Despite the scare stories, neither an increase in congenital defects nor a decreased birth rate has been shown among LSD users.
L.A. Acid
Dr. Schoenfeld:
I live in the Los Angeles area and I know several people who have taken LSD. I also know people who have taken what is called acid. Around here they seem to be two different things. The acid makes you lose all sense of depth and you see things wavy and in fours. In all of the magazine articles I have read, this kind of acid has never been mentioned. Could you please tell me the difference and all of the effects and facts.

"Acid" is slang for LSD, but perhaps your friends are taking different drugs. Since all the LSD found in the "street" is illegally manufactured, different batches may contain impurities giving varied effects. Some drug experts believe bad trips would be reduced if pure LSD were used rather than street LSD.
LSD Therapy
I have dropped acid several times and have gained a certain degree of insight into some of my psychic problems.
However, I would like to confine further exploration to a therapeutic situation. Can you give me the name of a psychiatrist who uses LSD as an adjunct of therapy?
All the legal LSD in the United States is controlled strictly by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Consequently, the drug may be used for research and treatment only after careful evaluation by NIMH. Rumor has it that permission for research is denied to those scientists who admit personal use of LSD.

Soon after my first LSD trip, I was pleased to notice that a chronic pain which had persisted in my right lung since a bout with pneumonia seven years ago, had disappeared. Also, a minor but chronic face rash has lately been fading away!
My friends think I am putting them on. What do you think, Doc, am I deluded or what?
