OBESITY
By definition a person is obese when their Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 30. BMI is calculated by dividing a persons weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. There is a fair consensus of opinion that obesity correlates with a higher incidence of many diseases such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart disease, strokes and diabetes. It follows that when a person is obese the medical advice is to lose weight. This advice is easier to give than for the obese to act upon. Only 15 per cent of obese people ever manage to maintain a given weight loss. Hunger is one of mankind's basic drives and it is impossible to lose weight without feeling hungry.
Home Remedies
Cutting off the plug to the refrigerator is a good start to any weight reduction program. Less dramatic action involves regulating what goes into the fridge in the first place. Fatty foods have twice as many calories per gram than carbohydrate or protein. A fridge without fat is a fridge on the way to complementing any weight reduction program.
High fibre supplements taken before meals with a large glass of water partially fill the stomach and produce the sensation of satiety. Weight Watchers as an organization has as much success with weight reduction as enterprises that charge much more. Exercise is of little benefit in the face of obesity. For exercise to be effective, at least 40 minutes of moderate exercise are required six or seven times a week.
