OESOPHAGITIS: TREATMENT AND HOME REMEDIES

Unlike peptic ulceration, Oesophagitis does not relate to the presence of Helicobacter Pyloridi. The condition is caused by acid splashing back into the oesophagus from the stomach. It appears to result from mechanical factors often in relation to obesity. Treatment of Oesophagitis involves the use of antacids and "raft" preparations. Both Zantac and Tagamet are used to reduce gastric acid secretion. Recently the "proton pump inhibitor" Losec has been used to good effect, where Zantac and Tagamet have failed to produce a sufficient reduction in gastric acidity.

Home Remedies
Try not to bend forward. This causes acid to rush out of the stomach into the oesophagus. Raise the head of the bed at night time and take antacids before going to sleep. Reduce weight. Intra abdominal fat pushes the gastric contents up into the gullet. If possible, sleep on the right side. This allows the stomachs contents to fall away from the oesophageal outlet.
