ALL ABOUT OESTROGEN
Oestrogen is responsible for the secondary sexual characteristics of the human female. It specifically targets the breasts, vagina and the uterine lining. Oestrogen in higher doses has a number of prominent side effects. These effects may occur at various times of the menstrual cycle, when women take the oral contraceptive pill or in later life when they take Hormone Replacement Therapy. Common oestrogen effects are nausea, vomiting, headaches, premenstrual tension, fluid retention, vaginal discharge, an increase in menstrual flow and the possibility of venous blood clotting.
When a woman reaches the change of life, oestrogen supplied by the ovaries often runs out with the egg supply. Some women escape symptoms because the ovaries continue secrete sufficient oestrogen even after the menopause.
Oestrogen has come under the spotlight again recently because it enhances the cholesterol profile. Women have four times less risk of heart disease than men up until the time they reach the menopause. After the menopause, the risk falls to two times less than that of men. So beneficial is oestrogen's effect on cholesterol that some post menopausal men have begun to take low doses of oestrogen to reduce their own risk of heart disease. This habit seems to distress the women in their lives who much prefer their men to be men. The price of Machophillia in such cases is the increased possibility of a spouse’s early death as a consequence of heart disease.
Oestrogen is also the hormone preventing osteoporosis in women before they reach the menopause. One third of women develop osteoporosis after the menopause and this development is preventable through the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy. It is worth making the point that Hormone Replacement Therapy serves up to the body, no more or less oestrogen than was produced by failing ovaries in the first place. Unlike the oral contraceptive pill, Hormone Replacement Therapy is not an overdose. It is just what it sets out to be: replacement.
