MARIJUANA AND EPILEPSY
Is the smoking of marijuana dangerous to an epileptic? Quite a few years ago, I suffered two mild epileptic seizures and I am very interested to find out if smoking grass could bring about another attack.
Marijuana is a known long-acting anticonvulsant. Should more research be permitted the drug might prove to be valuable in treating certain types of epilepsy. But at present the answer is not definitely known.
(Author's note: I have received several telephone calls from epileptics who claimed they had used marijuana frequently without apparent harm. One caller said the drug had decreased his seizures. The following letter was received shortly after the above question appeared in print.)
Dear Dr. Schoenfeld:
I was interested in the question submitted by a reader concerning the possible effects of marijuana on epileptics. I too am an epileptic (grand mal). However, I have not had any seizures since my first attack two years ago. I continue to take medication (Dilantin) for my illness.
I have smoked marijuana several times in the past two years and have never experienced any ill effects.
I just thought I would pass this information on to you since others may be curious about the effect of marijuana upon their neurological system.
