MARIJUANA AND HEROIN: ESCALATION THEORY
Some of my friends who use marijuana also use heroin. Does the use of marijuana lead to the use of narcotics?
Most heroin addicts use or have used marijuana. In this respect there is an association between the two, but they are not causally related. Heroin addicts usually graduate to narcotics from the use of alcohol. In terms of disease processes alone, alcoholism is a far worse malady than narcotics addiction.
The link between marijuana and heroin is that both are illegal drugs, use of either of which is subject to severe penalties.
Although penalties for the use of marijuana and heroin are similar, it should not be assumed that the non-addictive properties of marijuana apply to heroin and other narcotics.
Heroin is one of the most addictive narcotics and regular use will surely lead to physiological addiction within four weeks. Anyone who risks addiction to drugs, legal or otherwise, which will cause him to spend much of his time finding means to pay for his habit is most uncool.
