PERNICIOUS ANAEMIA
The inability of the large bowel to absorb Vitamin В12 due to the lack of an "intrinsic factor" produced by the stomach leads to Pernicious Anaemia. Given in large doses by mouth Vitamin В12 can overcome the lack of an intrinsic factor; however doctors usually choose to inject В12 preparations on a periodic basis. Vitamin В12 itself consists of an unlikely combination of a cyanide radical and cobalt. Without supplies of Vitamin В12 the bodies red blood cells enlarge and become reduced in number. Until the appearance of synthetic В12 after 1948, liver extracts containing В12 and folic acid were the mainstay of treatment for Pernicious Anaemia.
Home Remedies
There is little need to take high oral doses of Vitamin В12 or liver extracts, now that an effective synthetic Vitamin В12 is available.
Folic acid should not be used in the treatment of Pernicious Anaemia. It allows the progression of sub acute combined degeneration of the spinal chord. Do not use multivitamins indiscriminately or oral preparations containing a collection of substances that are necessary for the formation of blood. They are usually insufficient to compensate for an unspecified disorder and they complicate and obscure the diagnosis of what may turn out to be dangerous and life threatening situations, e.g. colorectal cancer.
