MENIERE'S DISEASE: SYMPTOMS AND HOME REMEDIES
The combination of severe vertigo, ringing in the ears, deafness, nausea and vomiting make up the picture of classical Meniere's Disease. Many people with Meniere's Disease become severely depressed. The startling suddenness of the attacks, the hideous retching and above all the terrifying loss of orientation in space, together with deafness and cacophonous head noises contribute to undermine their flagging morale. People have been known to commit suicide in their attempts to escape these symptoms. Medicine has no faithfully reproducible cure for the curse of Meniere's Disease and the illness is slowly progressive.
Antihistamines help relieve the vertigo and tinnitus, but sedation is their unfortunate side effect. Sometimes the vertigo, deafness, nausea and vomiting can be relieved by a peripheral vasodilator called Sere. This drug should be used cautiously by people taking antihistamines and people with a history of peptic ulcer or asthma. Surgery has a number of potentially successful procedures to offer. They include removal of the middle ear's balance control centre, the removal of a nearby nerve plexus and numerous methods to relieve fluid pressure in the middle ear.
Home Remedies
Some people with Meniere's Disease take Zinc tablets to relieve their symptoms. Many claim remarkable success. The medical literature has yet to catch up with the why and the wherefores of this essentially innocuous intervention.
