Physicians
General physicians are a dying breed of medical practitioners. Originally their role was the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases that did not require surgical intervention. Today this role has largely been appropriated by experienced general practitioners and a host of other medical specialists who have entered into arcane areas of medical practice or taken over the high ground of lucrative investigative and interventionist procedures. Cardiologists come to cluster their activities around bicycle exercise tests or adventurist expeditions up the coronary arteries. Gastroenterologists have commandeered the endoscope. A procedure that could be mastered by many with far fewer qualifications has become the exclusive prerogative of their high income domains. If general physicians manage to make any sort of a living at all, it is because they very rarely transfer their patients back to the care of a referring general practitioner.
Physiotherapists
Physiotherapists are the men and women of health care with the healing hands. They have discovered a multiplicity of ways and means to make physically ill people get better faster, without the use of drugs and surgery. High on the list of physiotherapists tricks of the trade are ultrasound and interferential radio waves. Applied in the right fashion these forms of therapy aid and abet the healing process. The relative scarcity of this band of allied health practitioners means that they can now make a better income than many general practitioners.
Orthopedic Surgeons
Tendons, nerves, joints and bones are the province of orthopedic surgeons. For some reason orthopedic surgeons are some of the most aggressive men in the practice of medicine. It is possible to say this without fear of sexism; because the college of orthopedic surgeons is one of staunchest bastions of male dominance that exists in the field of medicine today. There is little doubt however, that these men of rugby, steel pins and bone cement earn their money the hard way. The tide of human carnage that rises each long weekend from an ocean of motor vehicle accidents sees to the maintenance of their ongoing skills. Perhaps the greatest triumph of orthopedic surgery lies in the field of joint replacement. So successful have such procedures become, that people who undergo a total hip replacement can expect an excellent outcome in 98 per cent of cases.
