MENINGITIS
Acute bacterial Meningitis is a severe life threatening condition and without treatment 90 per cent of its victims die. The incidence of Meningitis is highest in children, usually in the first month of life. One in 4,000 children under the age of five will catch Meningitis caused by bacteria called Haemophilus Influenzae. Other bacteria such as Meningococcus and Streptococcus Pneumonia cause Meningitis; but less commonly than Haemophilus.
Meningitis is always suspected when a child or an adult complains of headache, fever, photophobia, neck stiffness and nausea. Vomiting often accompanies these symptoms although in infants the symptoms are less specific. They may develop a fever and go off their feeds. Vomiting, irritability and excessive sleepiness can also occur. The definitive diagnosis of Meningitis cannot be made without a lumbar puncture. Fluid from around the brain is sampled via a needle in the lower back.
With Meningitis there is no time to waste and treatment usually begins before the causative organism is identified by the laboratory. Most cases of Bacterial Meningitis respond to one of various combinations of antibiotic therapy.
Home Remedies
Bacterial Meningitis can be masked by the inappropriate use of antibiotic therapy. Doses used "just in case" a child is going to develop a middle ear infection or bronchitis after a cold are insufficient to ward off Meningitis. Children with colds should be left alone by the medical profession. Bacterial Meningitis is just another reason why the prescription of antibiotics for colds and flues constitutes an extreme form of medical negligence.
