NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM FOR BETTER KIDNEY HEALTH
The very small kidney tubules are lined with mucous membranes that need to be kept open to perform their self-cleansing action. Vitamin A helps keep these membranes in good working order. Supplements are available; in foods, good vitamin A sources are dairy products, fresh vegetables, liver, lean meats and poultry. Eat them regularly to keep well supplied.
Protein helps replenish lost or damaged kidney cells and tissues, and guards against edema or water-logging. Daily, eat whole grain foods, lean meats or fish, natural cheeses, eggs, peas, beans, nuts and seeds.
Vitamin С also helps build and maintain healthy kidney tissues. Since this is a water-soluble vitamin, much of it is given off in wastes. Replenish the loss with supplements, fresh fruit juices and fruits.
Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) is also believed to be helpful in kidney function. The noted physician, Evan Shute, in The Heart and Vitamin 5, tells us:
"Alpha tocopherol plays a wonderful role in the acute cases [of kidney disease]. It far surpasses any other agent so far used. It may smother the early phase as water smothers a fire. Doses should be large, and other ordinary precautions should be observed about handling the…infection. There is real hope, too early yet to state with any assurance, that the rapid resolution of the acute phase of the disease by alpha tocopherol may prevent many of the late or chronic cases from developing, and thus may prevent some hypertensions in later life."
Vitamin E is available in capsule form. It is also found in whole grain foods, especially wheat germ.
A variety of kidney-soothing beverages. To protect yourself from hypertension, drink a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable juices. You may prefer to squeeze your own from seasonal plants rather than use bottled juices. If so, you can obtain an electric juice extractor for convenient preparation.
You may also enjoy salt-free, sugar-free and caffeine-free beverages in bottles and cans, available at health stores.
Round out your thirst quenching with an assortment of herb teas. The variety is almost infinite: peppermint, fenugreek, alfalfa, rose hip, fennel, chamomile, comfrey, flaxseed, golden seal, hyssop, marjoram, papaya, raspberry, red clover, sarsaparilla, senna leaves, slippery elm bark, spearmint, watercress, yarrow.
These and many more healthful beverages are available to boost your basic health, and help free your body from excessive sugar, salt, caffeine and other destructive substances.
A basic function of the kidneys is to regulate the acidity and alkalinity of body fluids. They do this by retaining or releasing substances according to conditions required to establish the optimum level.
This balance of body fluids prevents the release of excess renin, and is an effective way to avoid the development of hypertension.
