BABY AND CHILDHOOD NERVOUS SYSTEM AND MUSCLE DISORDERS: CHOREA (ST VITUS'S DANCE)
Chorea has a few other names. It is commonly called St Vitus's dance, or Sydenham's chorea.
It is a brain disorder which causes quick twitching movements over which the child has no control. These may affect the face, body and limbs. They may come on suddenly and have no obvious purpose. Often it seems as though the child is pulling faces at you.
It is more common in girls, especially those in the 6-10 age group. It is often associated with rheumatic fever. In severe cases it may make normal walking and speaking difficult, and normal muscle strength may be reduced. There is often a certain amount of emotional instability. The child may be confused, irritable, difficult to handle, stubborn, and find it difficult to sleep normally at night.
Treatment
In the early stages, treatment must be under adequate medical supervision. If rheumatic fever is present this must also be under the doctor's care, although these symptoms may not occur until afterwards. Various sedating and tranquillizing forms of treatment and bed rest may be necessary in the early stages.
The outcome is usually satisfactory, but recurrences may occur.
