BABY AND CHILDHOOD NERVOUS SYSTEM AND MUSCLE DISORDERS: HYDROCEPHALUS
Occasionally—and fortunately it is rare—certain abnormalities take place in baby's pre-natal development. The reasons are usually obscure, although certain reasons are known to play a part. Overexposure to X-rays during the pre-natal period may have an adverse effect. Maternal infection in early pregnancy with the rubella virus or other viruses, or insufficient oxygen to the baby during pregnancy may all play a role. In time, we may know more reasons and be able to take steps to correct them before they produce permanent damage.
Hydrocephalus, which really means too much fluid in the brain, is one of these. It is caused by an obstruction to the free flow of the fluids which regularly bathe the brain. Sometimes infections, growths or haemorrhages may cause this, but in most cases the reason is unknown.
Within two or three months after birth, the head gradually increases in size. This continues to increase out of proportion to the expected growth. The child becomes lethargic and irritable. There may be vomiting, and vitality and general well-being deteriorate.
Medical attention is essential, and certain investigations will indicate the nature of the disorder. A variety of treatments have been devised, some of them being an attempt to surgically reinstate the defective fluid circulation inside the head. Success rates are small, and usually a certain amount of permanent brain damage takes place. This usually leads to varying degrees of permanent mental retardation.
As a result, the child may develop visual and muscular defects, and gradually show strange patterns of behaviour that may be far from normal. Some develop muscular spasticity and may need specialized therapy in institutions. Occasionally some get better spontaneously, but this is unusual.
