HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: PSYCHOSIS, PUBERTY
Psychosis
In the grip of psychosis an individual loses complete touch with reality. Their mind is affected by visual or auditory hallucinations. They suffer from delusions, their thoughts become disordered and their mood fluctuates out of control.
The causes of psychoses are many and varied. They include Schizophrenia and Manic Depressive Psychosis. Alcohol withdrawal and the Delirium Tremens display features reminiscent of psychoses, as do the Amphetamines and other illicit drugs like LSD when taken in overdose.
The major tranquillizers have proved a great boon in the management of psychoses. Drugs like Largactil and Serenace seem to pull disordered minds together. They dampen or extinguish hallucinations and bring disordered thoughts and the mood under control.
Puberty
In females puberty arrives between the ages of 7-19. Precocious puberty before the age of seven raises the question of a glandular disorder and indicates the need for an assessment by a specialist pediatrician.
Puberty in males occurs a few years later than puberty in females. For both sexes, puberty is the time that adult sex hormones come onto line and begin to produce typical gender specific secondary sexual characteristics.
The complexity of western society ensures that young people spend a long time in the education system. As physical adults, young people are forced to maintain the status of children until such time as they go to work. The term adolescence has been coined to describe this difficult apprenticeship.
