HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: RHINITIS, RINGWORM AND ROSS RIVER VIRUS
Rhinitis
Rhino is the medical term for nose and "itis" means inflammation. An inflamed nose can be caused by a number of factors. The most common include Allergic Rhinitis in the form of hay fever and Infectious Rhinitis in the form of the common cold.
Ringworm
Ringworm is another name for the common yeast or fungal infections caused by tinea. Tinea itself is the Latin word for a circular worm and it relates to the red active boundary that usually circles the site of an active tinea infection. Tinea is rapidly responsive to the Imidazole creams such as Canesten and Daktarin.
Ross River Virus
The Ross River Virus causes a painful arthritis affecting many joints. The virus is transmitted by a mosquito; but wild fowl act as the intermediate host and spread the virus all over Australia. Epidemics commonly occur after heavy rains and the migration of the opportunistic wild fowl. Recently outbreaks have occurred as far apart as Perth and Tin Can Bay.
There is no effective treatment for the Ross River Virus; nor is there a vaccine. After a flu like illness and episodic diarrhea about 15 per cent of victims experience debilitating pains in the joints. These pains may last from six to twelve months. Thankfully the pain invariably passes away.
Home Remedies
The prevention of Ross River Virus involves the eradication of mosquitoes and the avoidance of bites. In areas where Ross River Virus is prevalent do not allow water to accumulate in the garden. Empty the dishes under pot plants and burn mosquito coils at night. Don't go into mosquito country with out long sleeves and insect repellent and don't get caught out in the subtropics or the tropics after dark.
