S.S.P.E.
Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis is a progressive and invariably fatal disease of children and adolescents. It is caused by the measles virus and can be considered a slow form of measles encephalitis. The disease strikes years after an earlier measles infection and children are characteristically well until the disease begins.
The insidious onset of mental deterioration, often demonstrated by a decline in the quality of homework, becomes the earliest presenting symptom. In-coordination leads to a Parkinsonian like syndrome and blindness as the Encephalitis slowly progresses. The child becomes bed ridden after nine to ten months and death results from pneumonia or urinary tract infections.
Home Remedies
Immunize your children against the measles. There may be some risk of SSPE from the vaccination, but the risk is far greater if children are left unimmunized.
Scabies
Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes Scabiei. It is spread by close physical and sexual contact. Sometimes epidemics occur in institutions such as prisons and mental hospitals. Children often bring the infestation home from school.
Infection with scabies is an irritating experience. The mites burrow into the skin of the wrists and the fingers. They lay eggs in the burrows and their activities and saliva set up an intense itch. The itch is worse when the skin is warmer. Especially when people go to bed at night.
Given time the scabies extend their domestic activities to the skin of the trunk and neck. Treatment involves the application of Quellada from neck to toe. This scabacide is washed off 8-12 hours later. The appearance of resistance by the mites to conventional treatment is an alarming development. Precipitated sulphur -six percent in petrolatum is effective applied on three consecutive nights; but the associated mess and odour make this alternative remedy unpopular. Crotamiton cream (Eurax) kills both scabies and an itch. One application for 8-12 hours may suffice in children; however it is usually applied to adults as a cream or a lotion from the neck down for a period three to five days.
Home Remedies
Treat all family members and sexual partners. Double wash underwear, sheets and towels etc in a machine containing a dilute solution of antiseptic. If the scabies were sexually transmitted, attend the doctor for a Sexually Transmitted Disease check up. Other unwelcome infectious guests may have arrived at the same time.
