HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: SINUSITIS AND SNORING
Sinusitis
Sinusitis is frequently caused by a bacterial infection in the cavities of the facial bones. More people claim to suffer from Sinusitis than ever is really the case, because the diagnosis is often confused with chronic hay fever. Symptoms are almost identical. Sinusitis is more likely to be a complication of an isolated head cold. Chronic hay fever grumbles on for months and months.
An acute infection of the facial sinuses causes local pain and a purulent nasal discharge. Treatment is straight forward consisting of Paracetamol for pain and antibiotics to kill the offending bacteria. Coexisting chronic hay fever is treated as an independent event.
Home Remedies
Inhalations of menthol and eucalyptus stimulate the intra nasal hair cells to propel mucus out of the sinuses
Snoring
Men producing snoring noises that reach a loud crescendo, followed by episodes of absent breathing are 12 times more likely to die from a heart attack then men without this disorder. The syndrome of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is much more common than people might expect. It affects four per cent of the adult population and it leaves victims suffering from excessive day time tiredness. This syndrome also correlates with a higher incidence of high blood pressure, respiratory failure and stroke.
Diagnosis involves assessment by a clinic specializing in the management of sleep disorders. Confirmation requires all night monitoring with a "polysomnograph". Treatment revolves around weight reduction, the avoidance of alcohol and if necessary continuous positive airways pressure at night whilst sleeping.
