HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: PUS, STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREOUS AND STREP THROAT
Pus
Pus occurs when populations of white cells explode and die in an attempt to kill invading micro organisms with their digestive contents. Many bacteria produce enzymes and toxins which in turn contribute to pus through the break down in bodily tissues. Staphylococcus is common pus producing organisms and pus produced by Pseudomonas organisms is renowned for its greenish coloured tinge.
Home Remedies
Controversy still exists as to the therapeutic role of pus. The purists will argue that pus contains enzymes and antibodies that destroy bacteria. In excess it is reasonable to keep pus clear of a wound. When pus is confined to a tissue plane in the development of an abscess or carbuncle - incision and drainage is always the rule.
Staphylococcus Aureous
Staphylococcus Aureous is so named because it forms small pearly golden colonies on culture medium. This bacteria lives normally on human skin and it is responsible for most abscesses, boils, carbuncles and furuncles.
The widespread and often indiscriminate use of antibiotics since their discovery in the middle of the 20th Century has selected out strains of Staphylococcus that are resistant to all known forms of oral antibiotic treatment.
Staphylococcus has a predilection for the inside of noses and the anal sphincter. Any plan to remove Staphylococcus from the human skin must address these habitats.
Home Remedies
Recurrent boils, carbuncles and furuncles warrant an antiseptic in the bath water for at least two weeks. A small dab of Savlon or Betadine cream in the nasal orifice and around the anal verge twice daily serves to clear these areas of their Staphylococcal guests.
Strep Throat
50 per cent of localized red sore throats are caused by the Streptococcus bacteria and this infection is still exquisitely sensitive to treatment by penicillin. One of the reasons that doctors are so quick to provide antibiotic cover on the suspicion of Streptococci is the potential for unpleasant complications. Streptococci are related to the production of both Rheumatic Fever and Post Streptococcal Glomerulo Nephritis.
In parts of the world where antibiotics are not freely available much higher incidences of these complications occur. Just to put a balanced point of view, there are some that say these differences in the rates of complication are due to nutritional status and not the use of antibiotics at all.
