HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: SUDAFED, SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME
Sudafed
Pseudo ephedrine is a frequently purchased over the counter decongestant. This drug reduces nasal discharge by causing small capillaries to constrict. A logical outcome of this action is that pseudo ephedrine raises the blood pressure. For this reason, the drug should not be used by people with high blood pressure and care should be taken when driving or handling machinery. Pseudo ephedrine is a stimulant or an "upper". Taken in the morning and early afternoon Sudafed effectively reduces the running nose of hay fever or a cold.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
For reasons still not understood 1 in a 100 babies in the first few months of life stop breathing and die. Every month sees a new finding by some expert that claims to have come closer to the cause of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. To date the only finding of any preventative worth has been the avoidance of lying babies face down in their cots. In places as far apart as Holland and Tasmania putting babies to sleep on their backs has reduced the incidence of Sudden Infant Deaths by a factor of 50 per cent.
There is also a relationship between latitude and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. More babies die in colder climates than they do wherever it is warm. The risk of Sudden Infant Death does not appear higher when a child in the family has already suffered that fate; but it does climb if two children in the one family have succumbed to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Home Remedies
Never sleep infants on their faces. In winter keep the room at a pleasant temperature with a reverse cycle air-conditioner or an electric oil heater. Do not wrap babies up tightly in many clothes and blankets when the weather is cold. There is a Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Society in every state. Contact them if you have lost a child to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Don't suffer in silence or alone.
