BABY AND CHILDHOOD SKIN DISORDERS: FRECKLES
Freckles (or ephelides, for scientific folk) are common. They are flat pigmented marks that occur commonly on the face, or trunk or extremities on children. They simply mean the melanin, the pigment-producing element in the upper skin layers, is irregular. So, when exposed to the ultra-violet light of the sun, instead of turning an even brown the skin turns brown in some parts but not others—so freckles are born.
They are made worse by exposure to the sun, and the longer the exposure, the more evident they become. They are more obvious in children who are blond or red-heads, less common in those with a dark or olive complexion. Those children who are prone to freckles tend to burn more readily, so on hot days greater care is needed.
Treatment
Avoiding too much exposure to the sun is essential. Having adequate protection is advisable when outdoors, especially in summer weather. Wearing broad-brimmed hats, not sun-baking, swimming for short periods of time, ideally with some protective covering on the shoulders or back, at least helps. Using the ultraviolet sun screeners liberally is a good idea. Many excellent brands are readily available. Blockout, ICI Filter cream and others are all good. Reapply often, and after each swim. For older children who are embarrassed by their freckles, applying cosmetic agents can assist, but this can be a tedious task.
