BABY AND CHILDHOOD SKIN DISORDERS: IMPETIGO
These are sores commonly occurring on the face, especially about the lips, and on the fingers and toes. They are caused by the family of germs called the staphylococcus, and sometimes by the streptococcus. (These names refer to the pattern of germs when they are examined under the microscope.) The infections may occur in babies, but are very frequent in children of school age—hence the common name of 'school sores'. The germs are highly contagious, and one child with open sores may infect an entire class, even most of a school!
The sores develop rapidly, weep, then rapidly crust over with a fairly firm, hard coating on top. Underneath pus forms. The surrounding skin becomes red and inflamed. Often the lymph glands nearby become tender and inflamed. All this represents the body's reaction—special protective cells and chemicals are produced in the lymph glands and pumped into the general circulation in an attempt to kill off the invaders.
Treatment
Crusts should be removed by gentle bathing, and the pus underneath also bathed away. Simple condy's crystal, though used by generations of families, is still one of the most effective remedies. Make the solution a faint pink—do not have it crimson or very dark red, for this is less effective. (And use a recepticle that isn't the best one in the house, for condy's solution has a horrible habit of permanently staining kitchenwarel)
Often you can enlist junior's help in carrying out this form of treatment. For some strange reason, if you do it he'll yell blue murder. If he does it himself there is usually peace and quiet, plus a good job performed. (Aren't kids the strangest fellows?) Most other common household antiseptics are also suitable.
Afterwards apply an antiseptic cream to the affected area. The most suitable and effective are antibiotic creams or ointments prescribed by your doctor. (A prescription may be required for these in most states in Australia.)
The sores are best covered to help check their spread, both locally and to others. Germs may readily be passed on to toys and books or implements belonging to others. Large areas may need bandaging. Single lesions can be simply covered with band-aids. Children with extensive or severe infections should be kept at home until cured, to prevent the germs being spread to others. Painting surrounding skin with spirit or other antiseptic may help check local spreading.
General attention to diet is worthwhile. Any infection tends to attack a person whose health and resistance is below normal. How does your child fare in this regard?
In some cases, usually the minority, antibiotics may be given orally to help check the infection. This is more probable if simple measures fail to heal promptly (usually within a few days), or if the lesions are widespread and profuse.
