BABY AND CHILDHOOD SKIN DISORDERS: RINGWORM OF THE BODY
These are circular areas (often the size of a 10 or 20 cent piece, though it varies) occurring on the limbs or trunk. They have a clear central area, with tiny blisters at the margins. They spreadfrom the periphery outwards. The number varies from a single lesion to many. Sometimes they are thick and pigmented. If there is any doubt in the diagnosis, the doctor will take some scrapings from the margin and examine these under a microscope. These infections may come from household pets, or from exchanging clothing with other infected children.
Treatment
Play it cool, and treat gently. Do not over-medicate, for this may aggravate rather than assist. Try simple half-strength Whitfield's ointment first. Or tolnaftate drops (Tinaderm or Tinacidin 1 per cent) rubbed gently into the rings twice a day is often dramatic in effect. Compound undecylenic acid ointment is sometimes used with good effect, preferably in non-chronic, non-pigmerited areas.
If simple measures are ineffective after a reasonable time, see the doctor—who may prescribe griseofulvins. The dosage varies with the patient's age. Side effects, whilst not common, may occur. This must be taken under medical supervision, and it is available only upon prescription.
