BABY AND CHILDHOOD SKIN DISORDERS: LICE
Pediculosis is the medical term for lice, a horrid living parasite that has a predilection for human hair. It is commonly called crabs. It is fairly readily diagnosed, for the livestock can often be seen scuttling around on the scalp. Alternatively the eggs, called nits, tiny greyish globules, may be seen firmly adhering to a hair shaft. School teachers and parents become very skilled at picking up these points of diagnosis and are often experts in detection.
In times past, lice infestation has been very common, and related mainly to poor hygiene and a low standard of living. As all these improved in the community, it waned. But for reasons unknown, there has been a major resurgence in the past few years. Now it seems to affect all strata of society, irrespective of their standards of personal care and cleanliness. Often those teaching or caring for infected persons themselves become afflicted—such people as teachers, social workers and those attending to children in institutions.
Lice tend to congregate in one of three areas of the body, and they tend to stick to their own territory. Head lice are confined to the hair of the head and the scalp. Body lice are confined to the general body area. Pubic lice (often referred by the colloquial name crabs) are present in the pubic hair region.
The main symptom is irritation because of the movements of the lice on the skin surface. Therefore, scratching is common, and often the skin surface will be broken, allowingsecondary infection to take place. As a result, lymph glands in the surrounding areas (in the neck, around the ears, armpits or groin) may become swollen and tender.
Treatment
Diagnosis is fairly simple for an observant parent or teacher. It depends on seeing the lice or nits. The application of gamma benzene hexachloride lotion (Lorexane or Quellada) gives excellent results. One application is usually adequate, but a second one seven to ten days later may be necessary. Combing the hail with a comb in which the teeth are very close together may assist in removing the nits.
Overseas a 'super louse' has been making its presence felt, and this seems to be resistant to the treatment described above. Special applications of the pesticide Malathion have been used overseas but as this is an extremely potent chemical it should be used only under the doctor's supervision.
If skin lesions are present from the scratching, antibiotics may be prescribed by the doctor. Usually everything heals up fairly satisfactorily.
Personal hygiene is essential, and this will greatly assist in preventing occufrences. In schools where lice have been rampant, regular inspections of pupils are carried out, and this is an excellent idea to help keep it at bay.
