CHILDREN’S HEALTH: INSECT BITES
Preventing insect bites
Children are more likely to be bitten by insects if they play outside, especially near rivers and at dusk. At these times children should wear long trousers, long-sleeved tops, and shoes and socks, to better protect them from biting insects. Neutral-coloured fabrics such as tan, white and khaki are less likely to attract insects.
Insect repellents, such as Rid and Aeroguard, are also useful. It is best to choose a low irritant, roll-on formula. Because very small insects may penetrate fly wires, a household insect spray is also advisable. Insects may live in birds' nests in the eaves of older houses, so these should be cleared regularly.
Treating insect bites
Most insect bites will eventually disappear and require only symptomatic treatment such as cool compresses or antihistamine tablets. Anesthetic creams should be avoided, as they often produce allergic reactions. For more severe bites it is best to see your local doctor, who may prescribe a topical cortisone cream. Children who are highly sensitive to insect bites or bee and wasp stings can be given special desensitization injections.
