In recent years, the craze of piercing the ear lobes has taken off in a big way. Now babies, infants and females of any age have their lobes stuck and gadgets thrust through them, in a quest, I suppose, for greater permanent beauty. I personally do not condone the idea. But like the wheel, the fashion is here, and probably here to stay.
In most instances the piercing is done without any problems, but a certain number do run into trouble. Infections at the site of the piercing are common. The hole becomes infected and pussy, the lobe may swell and become sore, red and painful, and the glands nearby also become swollen and tender. There may be a fever.
Apart from this, a certain number of females develop keloid, small meaty growths of tissue on the inner side near the hole. These may grow to the size of a pea or even bigger. They are unattractive and uncomfortable.
There is another consideration worth knowing about. Fortunately, the risk has become less in the past few years, with most operators and beauticians now using pre-sterilized instruments and studs. But if top-quality hygiene and sterilized instruments are not used, there is a high risk of infection. The most serious is hepatitis B, which can cause serious liver disease and may be life-threatening. Many cases have been reported in the medical journals, and it is possible for this to be lethal. What happens is that germs may be transmitted by unsterile equipment from one person to another. The person on whom the equipment was previously used may be a silent carrier of hepatitis B. In fact, a whole series of persons could be affected. So, any parent planning ear piercing for daughter must visit a high-class beauty expert who uses sterilized gear and studs. And teenagers who are attracted to the craze should be warned of the danger.
Treatment
Take your child to see the doctor. Antibiotics will be needed and proper care is essential until the infection has been cleared. Unsightly scar and keloid growths may have to be surgically removed. In some cases, this requires the services of a cosmetic (plastic) surgeon.
