BABY AND CHILDHOOD DISORDERS OF THE EARS, NOSE AND THROAT: MALFORMED EARS
A large range of congenital abnormalities may affect the ears. If there is an outer structural defect, it may indicate an internal deformity also. This may be associated with a defect of the urinary-kidney system also. Small skin tags, abnormal small canals called fistulas, or cystic masses in front of the ear are possible. Protruding ears may be an inherited characteristic. Also, inherited anomalies of the canals may occur.
Treatment
Most of these defects are amenable to treatment. Today cosmetic surgery has reached a high degree of skill. Often infants are surgically corrected at an early age—probably the best idea. If you have any queries, visit the doctor for further advice and referrals. Severe congenital defects will probably be attended to in the hospital soon after the child's birth.
