When more and more of a regularly taken drug is needed to produce the same therapeutic effect, drug dependence is said to have occurred. Withdrawal symptoms predominate when a drug of dependence is ceased. A drug of dependence takes the place of an analogous substance in the body by blocking or enhancing its normal effects. When supply of the analogous bodily substance fails to return after the removal of a drug of dependence true addiction has occurred. Withdrawal symptoms constitute the body’s natural response to the lack of those intrinsic substances.
Such an interpretation of the dependence producing process implies that alcohol replaces the brain's natural alcohol substances in alcoholics and heroin replaces the brains natural opiate substances in heroin addiction. More recently doctors postulate a genetic cause for some people's inability to switch on the supply of the body's intrinsic chemical substances after subversion by substitutes such as alcohol, nicotine and heroin. The same logic applies to Valium, Amphetamines and appetite suppressants.
Consistent with this perspective is the notion that genetics prime dependence prone personalities to addiction upon exposure to the substance of their downfall. This is why Alcoholics Anonymous advocates an "all or nothing" approach to the consumption of alcoholic beverages and why conversely some people remain recreational users of heroin without ever discovering addiction.

Home Remedies
Never stop a drug of dependence suddenly. Whether it is alcohol, nicotine, heroin, caffeine or a medically supplied drug of addiction - withdraw the drug slowly. A good rule of thumb is reduction of the drug by one eighth of the total daily dose per week.
